Bern, Switzerland
A Capital City
Bern (Berne in French) is the capital city of Switzerland and its fourth largest city after Zurich, Geneva and Basel. During my leisurely strolls through Bern’s Old Town, I found that the city offers historical sites, museums, musical venues, miles of covered shopping and ready access to outdoor activities to satisfy a variety of tastes.
As a capital city, Bern is relatively small with about 130,000 residents. However, it excels in providing an intimate and exciting setting for both residents and visitors. It’s location in a tight bend in the river Aare was a real advantage when the city was founded in 1191. Today, visitors will find a compact center city that can be easily explored

Walls and gates, built to protect the city, were expanded over the next two centuries to accommodate the westward expansion.
