Founded in 1478, Las Palmas has a long heritage of historical and cultural significance. Christopher Columbus stopped here in 1492 on his first voyage to the New World. Gran Canaria is located about 60 miles off the western coast of Morocco. The island has a year-round subtropical climate and beautiful beaches.

Gran Canaria is the second most populous of the dozen islands that make up the archipelago of the Canary Islands. As co-capital of the islands along with Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, commonly known as Las Palmas, has a population of nearly 400,000 residents.
