 Zagreb, A City in Recovery

Zagreb, located in northwestern Croatia, has been the capital city of the Republic of Croatia since it declared its independence from Yugoslavia in the 1990’s.  The city continues its recovery from years long ethnic and political wars.  Nevertheless, it forges ahead in its efforts to grow its reputation as a European tourist destination.  Present-day Zagreb is home to nearly one million Croats.

This is a city of two faces.  Upper Town, consisting of the two formerly walled medieval settlements of Kaptol and Gradec, is the old city with history dating back to the 11th century.  Lower Town is a post 19th century area where you’ll find most of Zagreb’s cultural, scientific and educational institutions, stylist shops and the group of parks and walks whose layout easily justifies its appellation as the Green Horseshoe.
